The second trailer for David Fincher’s new film Gone Girl, was released this morning and it sure does make you want to hate Ben Affleck even more than when he was announced as the new Batman.
The film, an adaptation of the novel by Gillian Flynn in which the author herself wrote the screenplay, focuses on the relationship between Nick and Amy Dunne (played by Affleck and Rosamund Pike) and the tragic turn of events that occur. She has disappeared just after their fifth wedding anniversary and the suspicion turns immediately to Nick, who the police and the media begin to believe murdered her.
It’s a story that could have been ripped from the headlines in recent years and the stuff of Lifetime Television movies. But there’s a whole lot more going on here, especially when David Fincher is the man in the director’s chair. He turned the creation of Facebook into an Academy Award winning film and with a filmography that includes films such as Seven, Zodiac, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, this new movie seems to have Fincher back in the dark and gritty storytelling mode we’ve come to expect from the complex and brooding filmmaker.
The trailer was preceded by the release of four cryptic teaser posters that read “Happy Anniversary” at the top and an evidence bag underneath, each one holding a different item including a pair of red panties, a sharp blade, and a handwritten note that reads: “This man may kill me.”
The 20th Century Fox film opens in theatres October 3rd, which falls in line with a release from a major studio that feels their film is poised to garner some end of the year Oscar consideration. Affleck and Fincher are no strangers to Academy Award recognition with both men nominated for their work in the past and Affleck’s film Argo winning Best Picture in 2012.
Judging by the preview of their newest film, they may very well both be nominees once again.
